Making sense of Git and GitHub

Details

New developers have trouble with Git and GitHub, but so do experienced ones! Would you like to take a step back and really understand these fundamental developer tools? If so, Suncoast Software Skills Meetup’s next session is for you!

Join us for a beginner-friendly seminar designed to demystify Git and GitHub! Whether you're a coding novice or simply looking to get a better understanding of version control, we’ll guide you through the fundamentals with a practical hands-on exercise!

And yes, this is a SHAME-FREE ZONE. Even after all these years using various source control systems leading up to Git and GitHub — rcs, cvs, Visual SourceSafe, Subversion (svn), TFS — we still stumble. This workshop is all about getting good at Git and Github!

What you’ll learn:

  • Why Git and GitHub exist and how they're transforming collaborative work
  • Essential Git commands and workflows to manage your projects
  • How to create repositories, make commits, and track changes
  • The power of branches and how to use them effectively
  • Collaborating with others through pull requests and code reviews

Hands-on practice!
Put your new skills to immediate use in our collaborative storytelling exercise! We’ll work together using Git and GitHub to edit and expand a story, experiencing firsthand how these tools enable seamless collaboration while maintaining version history.

No prior experience is necessary! Just bring your laptop, and be ready to learn. By the end of this meetup, you'll have the confidence to start using Git and GitHub in your own projects!
