Silent Movie Night at Spreckels Organ Pavilion (With Live Organ!)

Details

Come join us at the historic Spreckel's Organ Pavilion for a night of music starring the very talented organist Russ Peck, who "specializes in the creation and performance of silent film scores to authentically recreate the movie going experience prior to the advent of sound." Russ will take on one of the most popular concerts of the Festival, the Not-So-Silent Movie Night, on the magnificent Spreckels Organ (which features real sound effects like Firefighter Truck and Police Car Horn, Train Whistle, and Bird Tweets among others). Russ will perform 1920s-style organ solos until the darkness of the night takes over the Pavilion, and then he will accompany three short (20 minute each) Laurel and Hardy films: "Putting Pants on Philip", 1927; "Two Tars", 1928; and "Liberty", 1929.

The above photo was taken at a previous Silent Movie Meetup that we hosted and we expect this to be a similarly beautiful summer night in America's Finest City.

The Spreckel's Organ was and is the world's largest pipe organ in a fully outdoor venue. Constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, it is located at the corner of President's Way and Pan American Road East in the park. That means this fantastic films were released when the Spreckel's Organ was still quite new. Amazing!

The bench seating is most comfortable when covered by your own favorite padding and it may be a bit breezy so a sweater or light jacket is recommended. If you are feeling a might bit peckish, pre-packaged foods are available at the Pavilion for purchase but snack items and beverages brought from home are always nice to have on hand.

We will meet at 7 pm and, if there is a large enough group of us at that time, we will secure seats about a third of the way back on the west side and we wil hopefully remember to get a heluim balloon to make us easier to spot. :-)
