🧠 Fun Facts About Torgny & Orval 🏡🍺
Torgny is more than just pretty — it's historically rich and geographically unique. Here's what makes this village and its surroundings so special:
---
🏡 Why do the houses look so Mediterranean?
Torgny enjoys the warmest microclimate in Belgium and sits right by the French border. Its ochre limestone walls, red tile roofs, and Lorraine-style farmhouses give it a southern French feel — totally unique in Belgium! The village is officially listed as one of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie”, which protects its beautiful, traditional look.
---
🧘♂️ What is a Cistercian monk?
The nearby Orval Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks, a strict Catholic order from the 11th century. They believed in hard work, silence, and living off the land — and they helped develop the area through farming and winemaking.
---
🧘♂️➡️🍞🍺 Who are the Trappists?
Trappists are an even stricter branch of the Cistercians. Famous for beer, bread, and cheese, they brew some of the world’s most renowned beers. Orval is one of only a few authentic Trappist breweries in the world.
---
🍻 What is Orval Vert?
Only available on tap at the abbey’s restaurant À l’Ange Gardien, Orval Vert is a lighter, fresher version of the classic Orval beer — originally made just for the monks. You can’t buy it anywhere else, so don’t miss the chance to try it!

Enjoy the trip — you’re walking through living history!
