### Belgian history, remarkable monuments & new connections

Sunday, 23 August 2026 • Laeken, Brussels

🇫🇷 Please note: the guided visit is in French only.

What if a cemetery could tell the story of a country?

This Sunday, Sunday Vacations is heading to one of Brussels’ most fascinating and surprisingly little-known heritage sites: Laeken Cemetery, often called the “Père-Lachaise of Brussels.”

This is much more than a cemetery visit. Through its personalities, monuments, sculptures and underground galleries, Laeken offers a journey into Belgian history and the Brussels of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

And we’ll discover it the Sunday Vacations way: together — with an international group, time to meet new people, and an optional social moment afterwards. 🌍

## Experience overview

The official guided visit is organised by Laeken Découverte, a local association dedicated to the heritage and history of Laeken.

They describe the cemetery as a “book of stone of Belgian history” — and that captures the experience perfectly.

As we walk through this extraordinary place, we'll encounter stories connected to figures such as La Malibran, Émile Bockstael and Marie Pleyel, alongside remarkable funerary monuments and sculpture.

We'll also discover Rodin's The Thinker, the choir of the former church and the cemetery's extraordinary underground funerary galleries — described by Laeken Découverte as hidden gems of the capital.

Rather than simply looking at graves, think of this as an open-air journey through Belgian history, art and memory.

The Laeken Découverte guide will conduct the tour primarily in French, so some understanding of French is recommended if you want to follow the historical explanations in detail.

The Sunday Vacations organiser can help with occasional English translation, short summaries or clarification where practical, but we cannot provide continuous or simultaneous translation of the entire guided visit.

You don't need perfect French to join. If you understand some French and are comfortable asking for the occasional explanation, you're very welcome.

And if you're learning French, consider this a chance to practise your listening skills in a real-life setting. 🇫🇷🙂

The Sunday Vacations social side remains international and English-friendly. 🌍

## 🗓️ Plan / itinerary

13:00 — Meet the Sunday Vacations group for lunch

We'll meet at the Brassserie Royal for lunch. Those that would like to have lunch there can arrive earlier.

We'll use this time for introductions so you're not simply arriving among a group of strangers.

14:30 — Guided historical visit 🇫🇷

The official Laeken Découverte guide takes us into the history and heritage of the cemetery.

Expect stories, personalities, art, architecture and some genuinely unexpected corners of Brussels.

After the visit — Optional social ☕🍻

Those who would like to continue can join us for a relaxed drink or coffee nearby.

No programme, no networking agenda — just a chance to continue the conversations and get to know each other.

Everyone pays for their own food and drinks.
