Sunday Vinyl Service: Our Freedom — The Sound of Standing Up
Tonight, Sunday Vinyl Service is a night about freedom, and the records that carry it.
Join wax. and Nido in Amsterdam Oost for a warm evening of rare vinyl, deep listening, drinks and community as the sun goes down. This edition, Our Freedom: The Sound of Standing Up, is about the songs people fought for, marched to, mourned with, and danced to when dancing itself was an act of freedom.
Our guest is DJ Amir, straight out of Brooklyn, New York. One half of the legendary digging duo Kon & Amir and founder of 180 Proof Records, keeper of Detroit's Strata catalogue, he has spent his life tracing how music travels across generations and how a local sound becomes a force that moves the whole world. He'll be spinning a three-hour set built around freedom, resistance and liberation.
The timing means something. Right after the Fourth of July, and 250 years of American independence, we ask what freedom really sounds like. From American independence to the civil rights movement, and the sound born from that struggle, blues, jazz, soul, funk, gospel and hip hop, that crossed every border and changed how the whole world moves and feels. Some records aren't just records. They're proof that people were here, that they resisted, and that they survived.
Come listen, meet people, have a drink, and stay late with us.
