Hike the San Onofre Beach Trail

ABOUT THE HIKE: We will hike the Bluff Beach Trail on a wide dirt road along the ocean with a backdrop of magnificent 100 foot high bluffs. From our trail head parking at restroom 15, we descend trail access 6 a quarter mile to the beach. We proceed north toward the nuclear power plant and then south toward Camp Pendleton. Total hike distance will be approximately 5 miles with 200 feet of elevation gain/loss. Lucky walkers sometimes see dolphins, seals and migrating whales. Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
ABOUT SAN ONOFRE STATE BEACH: The park sits at the edge of a 3,000 acre scenic coastal canyon area. Native Acjachemen, Spanish missionaries, rancheros, caballeros, the United States Marines and surfing legends have all made history at San Onofre. The Rancho Santa Margarita Las Flores was acquired by the US Government in 1942 for a Marine Corps training facility. San Onofre State Beach was leased to the State of California in 1971. The park is home to ten federally endangered species, including the Pacific Pocket Mouse. The park provides a variety of outdoor opportunities including hiking, camping, biking, swimming and surfing.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Take Interstate 5 south past San Clemente.... exit Basilone Road.... take Old Hwy 101 south to the park entry gate.... proceed south past the San Onofre Generating Station.... proceed past a series of day use, camping sites, trail heads, and restrooms approximately three miles to restroom 15 and trail access 6. Park in day use parking only. The park day use fee is $20 per vehicle on weekends.
