3-mi. Loop Hike, Yorba Linda Lakebed Park

Join us for a 3-mile loop hike around, and in, the dry lakebed in Yorba Linda. For most of the hike we will walk on the wide dirt trail that goes around the lakebed perimeter. We will walk about ¾ mile on the lakebed bottom trail. This hike is beginning level on level terrain (285-335 ft.). We will meet at the Short St. & Blueberry St. entrance. Parking is on neighborhood streets.

Your guests are welcome. Dogs on a leash are allowed but beware because we will pass by some backyards with dogs and this area has coyotes. We will start walking at 10:05 AM. No bathrooms are available.

ABOUT THE HIKE: The part on the trail around the lakebed is a peaceful walk with nice views but not a lot of shade. The part on the trail in the lakebed is through heavy foilage.

Please bring water and wear good shoes.

LAKE HISTORY: The Yorba Linda Reservoir opened in 1908 to store water from the Santa Ana River for local agriculture. In 1969, it was drained because of high water seepage. In 1975, its dam was ruled unsafe for flood control. In 1977, the lakebed became an environmental protected area. In 2014, the lakebed became City property to be preserved for natural open space and wildlife.

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING: Set your GPS to 5911 Short Street, Yorba Linda, 92886. Make your way to the intersection of Buena Vista Ave. and Lakeview Ave. (You can exit the 91 at Lakeview and head north; or the 57 at Yorba Linda Avenue and head east, then turn right on Lakeview.) Take Buena Vista Ave. east to Scenic View Drive and turn right. Turn right on to Ohio Street. Turn left on to Short Street. After passing a couple homes, you will see the trail entrance on the south side of Short Street near the intersection of Short St. and Rainbow St.
