Buck Gully Reserve, in Corona Del Mar - 5+ miles
Details
We will meet in the parking lot at Marguerite and 5th Ave across from the Oasis Senior Center. From 5th Ave we will walk to Poppy Ave to the entrance to Buck Gully Reserve. This is an advanced beginning hike, most of it on narrow single dirt path, with some elevation with shaded trees and bushes (lots of poison oak!) on parts of the trail. The trail from the parking lot at Poppy Ave to San Joaquin Hills & Newport Coast is 2.6 miles one way. About 5.2 or miles in all.
This version of Buck Gully will be marginally different as when we reach the turnaround point, instead of returning back down the same trail, we will venture down the sidewalk along San Joaquin Rd until we reach Bobcat trail and we will take that trail down to where it meets Buck Gully (Bridge)trail. This is a "lollypop" loop!
Directions from Irvine:
Go south on Culver Dr, past the 405 fwy, Culver Dr. becomes Bonita Canyon Dr. After you pass the 73 toll rd on Bonita Canyon, turn left on Prairie Rd. Take the 1st right onto Ford Rd, turn left on San Miguel Dr. Turn left onto San Joaquin Hills Rd, take 2nd right onto Marguerite Ave, turn right on 5th Ave, the parking lot is on the right. You will see the Oasis Senior Center on the left at Marguerite and 5th Ave.
Bring water, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen!
I'm sorry no pets are allowed at Buck Gully!
Evidently, the Oasis bathrooms are not available on Sundays any longer. However, we will have a choice of midpoint facilities before we return back: Starbucks, or at the Newport Coast Community Center.
