Sunshine Adventure Hike 12/21: Picacho Peak 🥾☀️

Let’s enjoy our last adventure hike of the year by climbing the cables at Picacho Peak! We will be taking the Hunter trail (the steep, short, frontal approach) and making the iconic climb and cable pull up to some of the best 360 degree views in the state.

This trail is a short and steep 2.8 mile out and back with 2112 feet of elevation gain according to AllTrails and should take us around 3 hours and fifteen minutes with time for pictures and breaks. While our goal is still to make connections in the sunshine, this adventure hike is definitely more of a challenging journey, suited for hikers who are experienced with difficult trails. Gloves are recommended for the cable parts of this hike.

Please note: this is a go at your own pace adventure hike - we will try to stay together as best as possible and I usually go at AllTrails averages as far as pace - but if you are unable to keep up, that’s okay, you can sit back and rejoin the group on the return portion.

We will convene at the trailhead at 7:50am for introductions and begin our hike at 8:00am. Please note there is a fee to enter the park (usually rangers are at the station at the time we are hiking), unless you have a State Parks pass.

Please bring lots of water and sunscreen, hiking poles will be very useful with incline stretches at the beginning. The weather forecast right now calls for 54 degrees at the start and 72 degrees by the time we finish. Perfect hiking weather, please note many portions are exposed and will be hotter in the sun.

Given the steepness and the difficulty of this trail, please make sure you are prepared for this hike, physically and provision-wise.

Not quite as steep as Pusch Peak or Sombrero Peak, this will be a challenging and steep hike. I think it will be about 2.5 Tumamocs 🤗

If anyone is apprehensive about the cables, check out the Sunshine Social Facebook page and search ‘Picacho Peak’ to find pictures and video of group members tackling the cable ladder on our last trip. It’s tough but also doable!

We will be taking pictures and posting them to our group Facebook page. Thank you for your consent to post by joining our hike 😎

Hope to see you out there!
