Sunshine Social Day Hike Excursion 3/4: Madera Canyon - Elephant’s Head🥾☀️🐘

Let’s tackle a challenging peak out by Madera Canyon. We will be hiking the Elephant’s Head trail.

The trail is a steep 6.1 mile out and back with 2300 feet of elevation, with some rockiness, brush and scrambling. This is a very challenging hike! From the map and other hikers, this is giving Pusch Peak vibes as far as difficulty. Difficult to say for sure, this will likely be a 5 hour hike.

Due to the distance from Tucson, I recommend carpooling. Others have noted that the road leading to the trailhead is not paved, so while you may not need an off road vehicle, I’m thinking high-clearance SUVs will have a better time accessing this hike.

We will be taking breaks along the way. If at any point the climb gets a little tough, no worries, you can hang back and we can pick you up on the return. If you have done adventure hikes in the past and stayed with the main group, you should be able to tackle this one 👍🏻

We will convene at the trailhead at 8am, please aim to be five minutes early so we can all start on time. On Apple Maps, enter “Agua Caliente trail” and make sure you click on the Santa Cruz county one (not the one on the NE side of Tucson!). On the map, you will see the trailhead is just south of Elephant Head peak.

Please bring water and sunscreen, hiking poles may be helpful if you’re comfortable with them. Recent reviews state that there are parts of the trail with a lot of brush, I usually enjoy shorts, but may do long pants for this one.

The weather forecast right now calls for 54 degrees at the start and 71 degrees by the time we finish, very nice and warming up!
