Turning Tides: From Post-Incident Community Learning to Freediving Advocacy

Details

Join us for a pivotal seminar that aims to dissect and understand a recent hypoxic incident within our freediving community. Hosted by Underwater 4 All’s Nicole Zelek, a very special guest - Gareth Lock of the Human Diver - joins us to share his expertise.

You can attend virtually or on-site at the studio where we will livestream and tape the show. This seminar is split into two segments:

## Part 1: Incident Insight: Learning Through Debrief

Gareth Lock, renowned expert on Human Factors in Diving, will facilitate an in-depth debrief with those involved, dissecting the event to highlight the decision-making and sense-making processes that were present. Together our community will not only reflect on the incident but deeply analyze the conditions, decisions, and protocols that led to a successful outcome, emphasizing the crucial learning points that can increase the likelihood of successful occurrences in similar situations. This debrief is intended to model future learning protocols for our freediving community to implement and practice. This segment models how effective community learning can emerge from critical incidents, fostering a culture of safety and preparedness within freediving. We can only reflect in the moment if we’ve reflected on the moment.

## Part 2: Alchemizing Advocacy: Laying Foundations for the Future

Nicole Zelek will pivot to the essential conversation on advocacy for better freediving access for the local community. Drawing parallels to the transformative journey of automobile accessibility and safety, Nicole will outline how safety, legislation, and access are intricately linked in shaping a future where humans’ relationship with water is central. We’ll discuss the necessity of establishing a foundation of safety in order to pave the way for the future of NYC Freediving. As a community, we’ll strategize and mobilize towards change!

Though the segments address distinct facets of the freediving world, they are united in the vision of paving a way towards a future that harmonizes safety, access, and advocacy. This seminar aims not only to educate but to inspire actionable steps toward a safer, more accessible freediving community for all.
