Details

Join us for this classic and very popular hike! The sunset and night time view from the top is beyond gorgeous. The Full Sturgeon Moon is Aug 9. We will meet at the Ohlone College Trailhead. You can park at the Ohlone College parking structure ($4) or on street parking (free). More info below. We can decide when we meet whether to go to the first view point (5 mi roundtrip) or all the way to the top (7 mi roundtrip).

Fun fact:
The full moon in August is called the Sturgeon Moon due to its historical connection to the abundance of sturgeon fish in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water during this time of year. Native American tribes and early North American settlers noted that sturgeon were most plentiful during late summer, making it a significant time for fishing. This name reflects the cultural and ecological importance of sturgeon to these communities, as the fish were a vital food source.

More fun facts: Alternative names for the August Full Moon
Flying Up Moon is a Cree term describing the time when young birds are finally ready to take the leap and learn to fly.
Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe), Harvest Moon (Dakota), and Ricing Moon (Anishinaabe) signify that this is the time to gather maturing crops. Along the same vein, the Assiniboine people named this period Black Cherries Moon, referring to when chokecherries become ripe.
The Tlingit people of the Pacific Northwest traditionally called this time of the season the Mountain Shadows Moon.
