September Dive Bar of the Month
Details
Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us at Desi’s last month.
This month, for the 9th stop on our 13th Anniversary Dive Bar Tour, we are going to one of the diviest bars in town, a longtime favorite that is unique in every way: The Tower Bar.
The building was built in 1932 and originally housed a drive-in soda fountain. The tower on top of the building, designed to look a little like the Empire State Building, was originally 110 feet tall. (Now it’s about 104 feet tall and continues to be a landmark in the area.)
In 1964, a driver plowed into the corner of the bar, killing a patron. Shortly after the accident, the bar started calling itself the “original hole-in-the-wall bar.”
The Tower Bar is small, dark, and dusty. In other words, perfect.
It’s octagonal.
There is a glittery gold bar that defies ordinary bar geometry. There’s a stage and four big tuck-and-roll booths. There is beer memorabilia everywhere.
There’s a full bar with a daily Happy Hour from 4 - 7 ($1 off wells and drafts.) They serve genuine Absinthe for $10 and offer cocktails like a “Hello Kitty Fart” and “Speed Racer.”
Plan now to join us at this perfect Dive Bar on Wednesday, September 27th, starting at 5 p.m.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
Cash or Credit? The Tower takes both.
Food? The Tower doesn’t serve food, but a few places are nearby if you’re hungry. (Or you want to bring food in.) The Key and Cleaver is about a block away, and they serve fantastic burgers (we tried them out last week.)
Parking? There is a small parking lot with ten parking spots behind the bar. Otherwise, it is only street parking in a very crowded neighborhood. Make it easy on yourself and take a rideshare.
