THE HAPPY VALLEY HIKE

A very picturesque hike through the Surrey countryside

Highlights

Walk through picturesque countryside valleys and lanes

Visit the Medieval Chaldon Church (One of Surrey's oldest Churches) & internationally renowned for its 12th century wall painting / mural

Pass through farmlands and country homes

Walk through the idyllic Happy Valley and over the Farthing Downs

TERRAIN

This is approx a 7 to 8 mile walk with several ups and downs so you need to be reasonably fit and capable of doing this kind of hike.

Ascents are not steep but there are several of them.

PACE

Brisk paced hike. Allow about 4 hours for the walk and 1/2 hour or so for lunch and maybe a 1/2 hour drinks and toilet break towards the end of the hike. It might be quicker or slower depending on speed of group......

Bring a picnic lunch with you to eat near Chaldon Church. There may also be a quick drinks and toilet stop at a pub towards the end of the hike

TRAINS

We will be meeting at COULSDON SOUTH train station.

At the end of the hike we will be passing through Coulsdon Town centre so you can get the train back from Coulsdon Town Station as well if you wish

STATION PARKING

Parking is available at the station and in some surrounding roads at the back of the station (but arrive early to find a spot)

Farthing Downs and New Hill is a 95 hectare (235 acre) area of chalk grassland lying within the London green belt. Farthing Downs was designated in 1975 as part of the Farthing Downs and Happy Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for having the 'most extensive area of semi-natural downland habitats remaining in Greater LondonA long history of human activity has been recorded on the site with archaeological finds and features dating from the Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman periods. Farthing Downs was cultivated up to the 2nd century, and used afterwards as pasture for grazing animals.
