About us
Sustainable Capitol Hill is a network of neighbors, businesses and community groups dedicated to making Capitol Hill a sustainable community and a vital neighborhood - one with strong connections between people, place and the local ecosystem.
We host monthly events for folks to meet neighbors, learn a skill, and become just a bit more sustainable along the way. We are also currently heading one main project: The Capitol Hill Tool Library.
The Capitol Hill Tool Library is similar to a book library, but loans tools instead of books. Imagine borrowing a food dehydrator, a ladder, a fishing rod, much like you would borrow a book from SPL. Imagine learning how to fix your broken toaster, building a worm bin, preserving your summer bounty. Enjoy a local community of knowledgeable fixers, tool lending, and workshops at the new Capitol Hill Tool Library.

Intro to Woodshop: Safety and Basics
Capitol Hill Tool Library, 1552 Crawford Place, Seattle, WA, USLearn how to pick the right power tools for your woodworking project – and how to use them safely! No prior experience needed for this free class.
- Due to overwhelming interest, we ask that you please RSVP here on Meetup.* If the event is full or the time doesn’t work for you, have no fear — we will host this event again in future months!
We’ll cover the basics of power saws, drills, and sanders, and best practices for working in a shared woodshop. You’ll get familiar with the tools we have out on the shop floor: our miter saw, band saw, table saw, drill press, and belt sander.
This class should give you the confidence and fundamentals to get started on your own projects; just come by and use the woodshop any time the tool library is open!
Please wear close-toed shoes and avoid dangling hair, clothing, or accessories. Make sure you’ve created a MyTurn account beforehand so that you can sign our waivers.
*Current Sustainable Capitol Hill volunteers can always join this intro (i.e. current tool library volunteers can join even if RSVPs are full and there's a waitlist, because all volunteers are encouraged to build their woodshop confidence).
