November meeting - Social media industry - Have we become junkies?

Details
This month we will look at social media from the perspective of an industry - subject to market logic, supply and demand, incentives and nudging, and profitability.
A fairly recent industry, social media has swapped the imaginary and a big fraction of people's time and effort - be it in the construction and maintenance of one's carefully tailored pages (Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Pinterest, Twitter, etc), or in following, rating, liking, commenting others'.
How influential can these outlets be? How can they shape society, our ways of thinking, behaviors, morals, and choices? How close or way distant are they from the lives of the ones who create and maintain the pages? Is the social media persona the real person in any degree?
How has the market logic taken social media? What are the impacts?
Have we become social media junkies?
