TITLE: How to Teach an Old Industry New Tricks: Utilizing Agile Methods for Medical Devices
DESCRIPTION: Software is key to many innovative new solutions in healthcare but often medical device companies struggle with adopting modern methods for software development. Traditional approaches to medical device development are hardware focused and this is reflected in the companies’ quality systems and in their organizational habits. How do we create a smoothly functioning product development organization with people from very different backgrounds and experiences? Modern medical device development often combines one group who is very experienced with efficient software development but not regulatory compliance with another group who is very experienced with regulatory compliance but not software development. Conflict and frustration ensue and sometimes the two groups don’t even have a common language to discuss their problems. This talk will cover lessons learned in what to do and what not to do in tackling the challenges of implementing agile methods at a heavily regulated medical device company.
SPEAKER BIO: Aaron Joseph is a biomedical engineer and Principal Consultant at Sunstone Pilot, Inc. where he helps medical device companies implement modern processes and tools for development of complex, software-intensive medical devices. Aaron has over 20 years of experience in medical device development over a wide range of products from surgical robotics to medical imaging to IOT devices at large and small companies. With this broad experience, Aaron guides clients in optimizing their design control and risk management procedures and implementing software tools to automate compliance documentation. He is an avid promoter of lean and agile methods for medical device development and is always looking for new ways to make it faster and cheaper to bring new medical devices to market.
