This will be a 5.5-mile hike on the yellow trail of Myakkahatchee Creek and along the Big Slough, a freshwater tributary providing connectivity to the Myakka River. The yellow trail is a bit longer than a mile and is a wide, flat, earthen trail which is easily navigated. This connects with the Live Long and Prosper trails in Big Slough Preserve. This trail has many roots with some small ups and downs. If you have hiking poles, they will come in handy on this trail. Much of the trail is shaded or has dappled sun; the terrain is mostly packed and firm, but there are sandy spots.

This is a loop trail in which we must cross the slough to complete the loop. It is dry now (March), but on May 17th, who knows? You may get your feet wet! I will try to update you as we get closer to the event.

Please bring a lunch or snacks as we will stop approximately half-way through the hike to take in the scenery and rest before making our way back. On the way back, there is a rope swing for those who would like to try it. Again, it swings over the dry slough right now, but you may be swinging over water in May!

What to bring: WATER, snacks/lunch, hiking poles, shoes you don't mind getting wet, a hat, sunscreen & bug spray, and anything else you need for comfort. Something to sit on during the break might be nice.

As of this writing, they are nearing the end of construction on restrooms at the park. Certainly they will be finished when we hike. This is where we'll meet and start our hike.
