Drinks, sunset watching & a full moon beach walk.
Details
Let's meet at Anna Maria's City Pier shortly before 7:15 PM and walk over to Sandbar for drinks and sunset watching. The sun will set at 7:56 PM.
This will be a special night (weather permitting) as we can expect to see the second full moon of summer! This will be the Sturgeon Moon, named by Native American tribes of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain regions, as this time of year was when the giant lake sturgeon—North America's largest freshwater fish—was most readily caught.
The full moon also coincides with a deep partial lunar eclipse starting at 09:23 PM. About one hour later, 93% of the moon should start turning red!
We can probably enjoy it while we drive back home.
The moon should give us sufficient light to hit the beach for a wonderful full moon walk via Bean Point back to the City Pier. To fully embrace the moon’s beauty, it should be a slow walk, no rush please!
We will start walking about 10 minutes after (!!) sunset. Peak low tide will be at 06:52 PM, making the beach even wider and very comfortable for a walk. You might want to walk barefoot to enjoy the sand. Pack flip flops or shoes for the last section past the former Rod and Reel Pier back to the parking lot. Total distance will be less than 3 miles.
Please expect rush hour traffic on the way to the beach and allow plenty of time. Maybe you even want to enjoy Anna Maria before we meet at the City Pier?
