As you all know, we usually refrain from advertising unless it is beneficial to our group members. Quite a while ago we heard about this app called "Upside" and since then we are regular users. "Upside" is a free app that lets you save a fair amount of money on gasoline, groceries and some restaurants.

WHAT YOU GET:

Average cash back per gallon of gasoline is around 5 to 25 cents but it can go up to 40+ cents. Currently it is between 12 and 15 cents.

Cash back at restaurants is usually around 6%. Participating among others is Mademoiselle Paris, the French restaurant we often use for breakfast. It has several locations (Anna Maria, Gulfport, UTC and Downtown Sarasota). Otherwise it is mostly pizza places and some fast food restaurants.

For groceries, Fresh Market (at all three locations) offers somewhere between 10% to 25% cash back (currently 17%).

HOW IT WORKS:

The app is indeed very easy to use, even if you are not tech savvy. You download the app on your cell phone, punch in a few personal details such as name etc., add the credit cards you use to pay for gas, groceries or restaurants and you are all set.

Once you need to fill up the tank, you open the app and it shows you a map with all the gas stations and potential savings in your area. You pick the gas station you like and click on "claim discount". The app even tells you how to get there if necessary. Once you filled up the tank, you just confirm in the app that you paid (choose respective credit card on file) and that's it. It usually takes about 1 to 2 days until you see the money in your Upside account. Payout options are plenty, direct deposit, gift cards etc. PayPal will be discontinued. No minimum necessary.

For restaurants and Fresh Market, you just take a picture of your receipt and download it. You will get detailed instructions when using the app. Again, very easy to do. You mostly get same day confirmation of your savings.

Wawa unfortunately does not participate but most other gas stations do, such as Speedway, Racetrack, Marathon, Chevron, Shell and Circle K. This comes in handy when we are on the road. The app also works outside Florida, so all our snowbirds can continue to use it back home.
