Fakahatchee Strand Preserve Adventure Hike – East & West Main Tram
Details
Join us for a true Old Florida adventure in Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, the largest state park in Florida and one of the most biologically diverse places in North America. This area is famous for its royal palms, rare orchids, cypress swamp, and incredible wildlife.
For this hike we’ll explore two different tram roads inside the preserve: West Main Tram and East Main Tram. Each offers a slightly different look at the famous Fakahatchee Strand ecosystem.
We’ll be driving along Janes Memorial Scenic Drive between trailheads.
We Will Meet At the Visitor Center for Check in
⸻
West Main Tram – Gate 7
Our first stop will be West Main Tram (Gate 7).
This tram road tends to be more open and slightly easier to navigate, with long straight sections that provide excellent opportunities for spotting birds and wildlife along the edge of the strand.
The terrain is typically a mix of dirt, grass, and occasional muddy spots depending on recent rain. The open landscape here often makes wildlife easier to see.
⸻
East Main Tram – Gate 12
Next we’ll continue down Janes Scenic Drive to East Main Tram (Gate 12).
This section heads deeper into the strand and feels more like classic swamp forest. The trail winds through cypress trees and dense vegetation and can be muddier depending on conditions.
About two miles down this trail we’ll reach the famous “Fakahatchee Hilton,” a historic backcountry cabin used by researchers and swamp explorers. The small boardwalk overlooking the water is a great place to stop and look for alligators and birds.
