February meetup

Details

It’s almost time for the February meetup. We had to hold back on announcing this one to contain the sheer amount of awesomeness it will bring.

Doors will open at 6:30pm and talks will start at 6:50pm. There will be some drinks and snacks, but we recommend you getting some dinner beforehand so you don't get hungry and grumpy :)

Animation, Layout, and The Merits of Laziness
Ethan Marcotte - @beep (https://twitter.com/beep)

We’re managing more complexity in our designs than ever before: our layouts are becoming more flexible and responsive, and our interfaces more immersive. Maybe we can look for simpler approaches? In this session, Ethan—a singularly lazy person—will walk through a few interfaces he’s worked on recently, and show how we might use simple effects and selectors to do a bit more with less.

Ethan Marcotte is an independent designer and author from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He’s known for coining the term “responsive design,” and also wrote a little book on the topic. Ethan’s worked for the likes of The Boston Globe, New York Magazine, and Starbucks, but lately he mainly posts stupid GIFs and swears heavily on Twitter.

The Prehistory of Responsive Design
John Allsopp - @johnallsopp (https://twitter.com/johnallsopp)

Many of us were not working on the Web when the ideas that underpin Responsive Web Design were born. John was. Indeed, his article from the year 2000, "A Dao of Web Design", a quote from which Ethan Marcotte begins his rightly famous article outlining (and naming) RWD called for designers to see the Web as new, more fluid medium, free from many of the constraints of the print world. In this presentation John looks back at the Web of the late 1990s, and asks what can we learn from those days, today.

Told you it was going to be great!
