Talking Films: February Meet Up!

This month, there are some clear themes throughout our playlist. Firstly, many of the selections below are tipped to do well in the current awards season- others are classic award winners that have to be seen!
Relationships and unlikely couplings thread through many of our choices this month, including the groundbreaking It’s A Sin, unfolding throughout the month on Channel 4 and All4. Both this and Documentary Welcome to Chechnya are on our list as part of LGBTQ+ History Month, which runs throughout February.

SERIES/MINI-SERIES
This month’s series include the sensational Its A Sin, unfolding throughout the month on Channel 4. We couldn’t resist including Netflix’s most ever watched series (and guilty pleasure!) Bridgerton, and if period drama isn’t your thing, BBC’s Normal People and I May Destroy You may be more up your street.
Finally, Netflix’s Lupin starring man-of-the-moment Omar Sy brings us an action-packed heist Drama, re-tellling with a modern, brilliant twist the classic french story of Arsene Lupin, master of disguise and skilled thief.

WELCOME TO CHECHNYA - BBC iPLAYER
This multi-award winning documentary takes a look at the extraordinary bravery of activists and Chechens whose lives are at risk as members of the LGBTQ+ community under threat by the republic’s tyrannical leader. Using groundbreaking new technology the identities of those most at risk are disguised, as their lives are followed to give an insight into the harrowing situation playing out under the republic’s new ruling regime since 2017.
RANKIN’s 2020
British Photographer Rankin explores 2020, a most peculiar year, searching for the photographs and photographers who have captured the spirit of the year in pictures.
Told over 6 episodes, each exploring a different theme (Empathy, Family, Nature, Fun etc) Rankin is joined by celebrity guests to pick out the best of the bunch, in this alternative look back at 2020.

FILMS
With Awards season up on us, this month’s film selection includes classic award-winners from yesteryear, and their contemporary counterparts vying for a place on the honours role at this year’s awards ceremonies. Alright, there’s a couple that we just really love and had to include too!
From Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane, long considered as one of, if not the greatest film of all time to Soul, Disney’s latest animated offering, there’s plenty of talking points.
2020 Tribeca Film Festival award winner Nobody Knows I’m Here rounds off our film list- an arthouse Chilean film which is as haunting as it is beautiful. Make sure you watch this one in the original Spanish with subtitles for the best viewing experience.
