Details

The Sydney Cloud Native Security meetup is on this month at AWS (on Level 8, 2 Market Street, Sydney 2000).

We'll be joined by our speaker Dr. Hammond Pearce, Lecturer (a.k.a. Assistant Professor) at UNSW. He'll be doing a super interesting talk on "Bugs begin, bugs begone: Large Language Models and their cybersecurity impact"

Emerging 'smart' code-writing language models such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT can work with (or without!) humans to create code. This code can contain bugs, but so too does code produced by humans. Do humans produce as many bugs when assisted by the AI? Can we prevent, or catch the AI bugs in the first place? In this research seminar, Dr. Pearce will present his group's exploration of the cybersecurity implications and applications of Large Language Models (LLMs) for software (C, Python) and hardware languages (Verilog). They measure the rate at which models produce bugs, with and without human pair programmers, and separately, investigate their applications in vulnerability repair and bug detection.

Agenda:

  • 5:30pm - drinks and pizza
  • 6:00pm - introduction from Nullify
  • 6:10pm - Dave Barton
  • 6:20pm - networking break
  • 6:40pm - Dr. Hammond Pearce
  • 7:15pm - more drinks and pizza

About Dr. Pearce
Previously he worked at NYU Center for Cybersecurity as a Research Assistant Professor, and at NASA Ames on a research internship. His research interests lie in the intersections of AI, cybersecurity, and hardware and embedded systems design. As part of his research work he recently won the Cybersecurity Award 2023 for the Best Machine Learning and Security Paper, the inaugural Efabless AI Generated Open-Source Silicon Design Challenge, and also previously won the Distinguished Paper Award at IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in 2022.

See you there!
