David Starkey on the Fall of Britain
Details
**Sincere apologies for the two date changes!**
Renowned British historian David Starkey famous for his BBC series has recently been speaking out on what he considers to be the Fall of Britain. A deeply erudite and knowledgeable man, once the darling of the establishment, he is now an enraged outsider and points back to legislative reform by the Blair government as the main recent source of Britain's ills leading to excessive migration and the reign of woke.
In contrast he makes a clear argument for a British conservatism with love of country encapsulated in Pericles' Funeral Oration. We will consider why he is so angry and whether and how his anger is applicable to Australia's situation and look at his proposed remedy.
He addresses specifically the 'Fall of Britain' on the always entertaining Triggernometry Podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2uoi98kESs&t=114s&pp=ygUcZGF2aWQgc3RhcmtleSB0cmlnZ2Vybm9tZXRyeQ%3D%3D (also available as a podcast)
However, his best summation of his philosophy is in this lecture which I encourage you to listen to (his has an unfair swing at Roger Scruton though!) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIXc3kM-FQw
Importantly he cites Pericles' Funeral Oration from ancient Athens captured by Thucydides as the model of patriotism. I encourage you to read the oration which is about a 12 minute read. does it provide a model for us? https://hrlibrary.umn.edu/education/thucydides.html
