Details

Welcome to the November edition of Elm Sydney and the final meetup for 2019! Thanks again to DiUS for hosting us!

We hope you've enjoyed the new direction our meetup has taken this year, and we're looking forward to what 2020 brings!

But before we close out 2019, we've got the following talks for your enjoyment!

-- Full length talks --

  • Castle of the Winds, a top down turn based RPG written in Elm
    Joseph Ni :: @mordraxx

Castle of the Winds is a turn based RPG game made for the Windows 3.1 by Rick Saada in 1989.
It was the game that started my love for creating things with computers and I have been attempting to rewrite this game for the better part of my career.

Concepts that I'll be covering may include, but not limited to:

rendering
input
dungeon generation
A* pathfinding
monster balancing
inventory
drag and drop
fov
game loop

Working towards phantom types. Modelling resources in Elm

  • David Factor

This talk works through several approaches for modelling resources in Elm.

Using a basic blog site as an example, I demonstrate a simple attempt at modeling the blog's resources using primitive types. This approach, while simple, has several shortcomings as our app begins to grow in size and complexity.

Using Elm's fantastic type system, I show two great alternative approaches: opaque types and phantom types.
