Promptly Visualised: A Technical Exploration of Natural Language Charts - Matt Fairbrass, Staff Engineer, MongoDB
How do you turn a simple text prompt into a fully realised data visualisation? In this talk, we’ll take a deep dive into how the Atlas Charts engineering team built Natural Language Charts, leveraging Generative AI to transform user input into insightful visuals.
We’ll explore the technical approaches behind our implementation, the challenges we faced (and how we tackled them), and the trade-offs we made between performance, cost, and accuracy. You’ll also get an inside look at our prompt engineering process, including how we test, refine, and continuously improve results to ensure high-quality, reliable chart generation.
Whether you’re building with AI, working with data visualisation, or just curious about the intersection of the two, this session will give you practical insights and real-world lessons from our journey.
