Nuclear Fun! Engadine-Revesby via Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor! 24km Medium/Hard
We will meet at the exit to Engadine Railway Station at 9:00AM.
From there we head 3km through town and find the remains of Old Woronora Road which leads us down to the Woronora River at the spectacular swimming hole, The Needles. From here we take on the one big climb of the day, using the remnants of Old Illawarra Road to climb up to Stephens Bluff, from where we walk through to the site of Australia's only nuclear reactor, the ANSTO facility at Lucas Heights. We take a short morning tea break to soak up some radiation (!) after our climb out from Woronora River. There is no public bathroom here, so it will be bush toilet at this stage.
From Lucas Heights we have a relatively easy walk 7.5km through Barden Ridge to Menai, where we stop at the local shopping mall for lunch at the food court and clean bathrooms. Yay!
Following lunch it is flat or downhill for 9.5km through to Revesby Railway Station, with spectacular views into Georges River from the elevated pathway across Alfords Point Bridge and a great parkland walk, up Little Salt Pan Creek, to complete the day.
We will conclude this walk by no later than 4:30 PM.
Distance: 24 km
Type of Walk: This urban/bush trail is incredibly rich in history, high physics and technology and, basically, it glows and it rocks!
Difficulty: Medium/Hard, because of the distance. There is just one major climb, in the first stage of the walk, but it is up an old roadway and I have allowed plenty of time to take this climb at a measured pace. The back half of this walk is relatively easy.
Walking Pace: We will average 4.5 km per hour.
Meeting Place and Transport: Meet at exit to Engadine Railway Station by 9:00AM. The regular train service from Central arrives at 8:56AM, on the day.
What to bring: Good walking shoes/boots or trainers; 1.5 litres of water, refill available along the way; hydrolytes; morning tea; light rain jacket depending on conditions; sunscreen and a cap or hat with a wide brim. THERE ARE NO SHOPS AT OUR MORNING TEA SPOT, SO PLEASE BRING YOUR FOOD FOR MORNING TEA. LUNCH CAN BE PRUCHASED AT MENAI.
Suggested Donation: $10
Pub: Revesby Workers Club; please bring photo ID for entry
