About us
Welcome to the Sydney Urdu Poetry Reading Circle! ✨
A space to experience Urdu poetry as part of the world’s great literary traditions—through shared readings, conversation, and a collective appreciation of language and form.
✅ You don’t need to speak Urdu or Hindi to join! This group is open to anyone who is curious to try out a poetic tradition.
✨ I will be organizing relaxed and inclusive poetry circles where everyone participates and learns.
✨ About me: I have a background in university teaching - computer science, logic and AI - and also love world cinema and literature. I have been fortunate enough to spend time among scholars of Urdu who instilled a love of poetry in me. With this meetup, I aim to bring together my love for Urdu poetry and my skill at facilitating discussion. I am also pursuing a PhD in AI + speech pathology from UNSW Sydney at the moment.

Faiz in the Park🌺
Hyde Park, Sydney, AUBhiigi hai raat Faiz ghazal ibtida karo
Waqt, suruud e dard ka hangaam hi tou hai
[Romanized Urdu]The night is drenched - begin the ghazal, Faiz
Time calls, after all, for a song of pain
[Translation]Come join us for an intimate Urdu poetry circle exploring the transcendent poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz ✨
In this moment of global conflict, Faiz offers us a language of hope, beauty, and resistance. A recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, his remains one of the most beloved voices in Urdu poetry, whose words speak just as powerfully today as they did decades ago.
