Sydney Python

Details
Welcome to our second post lock-down in person meetup! We have 2 great talks this month.
Talk 1:
Jonathan Hodges, Platform Engineer at 10x Banking
Buying Time with Boto3
The Boto3 AWS SDK is a simple yet powerful tool to extend AWQS functionality with Python. In this talk we'll explore what Boto3 is, how to use it and examine a use case where the 10x Banking Platform Engineering Team leveraged Boto3 to cut client environment provisioning time in half.
Talk 2:
Deanna Hood, Senior Robotics Engineer and Python core contributor
Template all the things! The Python templating system that powers robotics R&D worldwide
The Robot Operating System (ROS) is powering robotics R&D around the world - including penguin conservation robotics in Antarctica, the Robonaut 2 on the International Space Station, and a skin-printing robot medical device being developed right here in Sydney! One of ROS' fundamental features is its support for cross-language communication: allowing messages to be passed between processes running Python, C++, or any number of programming languages in parallel. This talk is about the Python module at the heart of ROS' cross-language support: the EmPy template system, including a minimal reproducible example so you can get started making templated code for your own projects!
About the speaker:
Deanna is a former core developer on ROS 2, a robotics framework that allows robotics researchers, businesses and hobbyists to leverage an international open source ecosystem. Before joining the ROS team, she used ROS in developing CoWriter, the first robotic partner for children with handwriting difficulties, now in trials with Occupational Therapists. Returning from Silicon Valley to Australia as the Senior Robotics Engineer on Inventia Life Science's skin-printing robot Ligō, she worked with plastic surgeons to help reduce the impact that scarring has on survivors of widespread burns. In her spare time, Deanna is a proud contributor to the Python core, and a STEM ambassador who's determined to help school-kids appreciate the massive potential for software developers to positively impact society, for which she has been recognised as Engineers Australia's 2022 Young Engineer of the Year - Sydney.
