Weekly Envelope - a hassle-free family budgeting tool

Thanks for the opportunity to tell the audience about the online service I invested my money into. At the moment this service has about 27 000 users (mostly Eastern European).

Do you have to rely on your credit card, friends or payday loans to survive 'til your next paycheck? How often do you make purchases hoping that you'll make repayments... somehow...? When was the last time your savings actually grew in size?

We all live in consumer society, and lots of honest and hard-working people around us face exactly the questions asked above. Unbalanced spending, abundance of temptations and lack of clearly defined financial goals lead people to living beyond their means and eventually - to financial disaster.

But becoming a responsible person doesn't require much effort if you're using simple and efficient approaches like the "Weekly Envelope" approach. It's as simple as:

  • Defining your monthly income (or your joint income in case you have a partner)
  • Writing down all your regular expenses (mortgage, utilities, insurance payments, planned birthday presents, etc)
  • Defining the size of your emergency fund and writing down a list of large one-time expenses you're going to incur in future and approximately when (ex: buy a $12000 car for cash next June)

Subtract all monthly expenses and savings from your single (or joint) monthly income. Then divide the result by 4.3 - and either imagine doing this or physically put the resulting money into an envelope. Contents of this envelope are your weekly budget: if you don't spend more than you have in your envelope - you will achieve your financial goals without the need to borrow money from anyone.

Yes, it's that simple. The key difference from other approaches is that the Weekly Envelope approach doesn't require you to classify your expenses. If you can spend $30 a day, it's totally up to you whether you're drinking a $5 cappuccino in the morning or buy a glamour magazine at lunch time. As long as you stick to the budget, your guilt leaves you alone. And if at the end of the week you have something left in your envelope - even better! You can either save this money or ... yes, spend it as you like. Guilt-free, needless to say.

Weekly Envelope online system

Weekly Envelope online system helps you practice the approach described above and takes into consideration various situations that are part of your normal life. It calculates the size of your weekly envelope and allows you to plan your expenses in advance. Both you and your partner can use this service. And it's really fast: on average it takes just less than a minute a day to add your expenses.

Your details are secure and confidential

We respect the confidentiality of the information you provide during the course of interaction with the system. This means that:

  • The system doesn't collect any information that can be used to identify you (with the exception of your email address, which you can register at any free mail service), - and we deliberately don't want know anything else. The system also allows you to generate a unique and random username (like a12345), which doesn't resemble any of your details.
  • You don't need to specify your bank details to enjoy the benefits of money management. Face it: it's a bit unsettling when in order to get the answer you have to give away your details of your bank, investment, retirement and credit card accounts. Weekly Envelope system relieves you from such need.
