What is intelligence?

Details
Are humans the apex of intelligence in the universe? Are we the exception and the only ones who are even capable of pondering this question? In recent years this notion, known as Fermi’s Paradox, has been challenged. Another notion has been challenged right alongside it – the triune brain theory – the idea that humans have newer, complex brain structures that rest on top of older, simpler structures such as a “lizard brain”. Is it possible that intelligence has evolved multiple times in different species?
What is your definition on intelligence? Does it only extend to humans or other forms of life as well? For instance, would you consider an octopus that plans ahead and grabs two coconut shells and walks them on the bottom of the ocean to hide in later, a form of intelligent behavior? How about a plant that releases a chemical compound when predators are near to summon another creature to prey on the plant’s predator?
The format for this event will be a group discussion, a departure from our usual lecture format. Please come with your own working definition of intelligence and we will discuss it as a group. This is an opportunity to meet BCSS organizers and other members of the group and socialize in a relaxed, respectful environment.
We will meet at Lucky Lab, please look for us at one of the long tables out back on the patio. Since this is an outdoor space, please dress accordingly.
This event is cross-posted to the Brain Science and Cognitive Seminar Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/brain-and-cognitive-science-seminar/
