OpenStreetMap Workshop

Details

"OpenStreetMap is a free (http://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright), editable (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Editing) map of the whole world. Unlike proprietary datasets like Google Map Maker (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Map_Maker), the OpenStreetMap license (http://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright) allows free access to the full map dataset. This massive amount of data can bedownloaded in full (http://planet.openstreetmap.org/), but also is available in immediately-useful forms like maps and commercial services (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Using_OpenStreetMap)." from OpenStreetMap about page (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WhatIsOpenStreetMap)

The workshop will be presented by Zeromap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/zeromap) and myself (http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/DTHG) at the Syracuse Innovators Guild (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/1929484414) and it will consist of:

A presentation covering: what OpenStreetMap is, why it's important, general how to info for collecting data and adding it to the Map

Then weather permitting we're going to go outside and collect some data (if we can't go outside we will use some data I already collected. This data can also be used by anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to go outside and collect data even if the weather is nice.)

Then we'll go back in and use the data to edit Map

There will be a least two people on hand with a good amount of editing experience who can help answer any questions that might come up while collecting data or editing the Map.

It would be ideal if everyone could bring a laptop and a smartphone with some way to transfer files from the phone to the laptop. I would suggest a USB cable because of the battery intensive apps we will be using but bluetooth and a file manager like OI File Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.openintents.filemanager) will also work.

If you can’t bring a laptop please post a message so I have an idea of how many extra computers will be needed.

If you can’t bring a smartphone with a GPS you could instead bring:

A standalone GPS it would be a good idea also bring compatible memory card (A standalone GPS might work better than a smartphone GPS but I haven't spent much time using them to record GPS tracks and it can be tricky) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Recording_GPS_tracks

A tablet some have GPS built in and even if they don't OSMPad can be used on either iOS or Android devices that don’t have a GPS (see links below)

Pen or pencil and something you can write one while outside like a clip board and paper

Digital camera and a cable to transfer the pictures from the camera to a computer or a memory card reader (I will also bring an SD card reader in case someone needs to use it)

USB GPS or any GPS you can connect to your laptop, tablet, or another kind of computer.

Things you can do to get ready (this will just save a little time but you can wait till you’re at the workshop if you want to)

Create an opensteetmap account https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new

Install JOSM on your laptop it’s cross platform (Linux, OS X, and Windows). You can download it here http://josm.openstreetmap.de/ and there is also an Ubuntu PPA so you can install the latest version of JOSM. (The latest versions of Fedora and OpenSuse have new enough version of JOSM in their repos by default)

If you have an Android Phones please install OSMTracker

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.guillaumin.android.osmtracker&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd

F-Droid: http://f- (http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=osmtracker&fdid=me.guillaumin.android.osmtracker)droid.org/repository/browse/? There are a ton of other Android apps http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Android but OSMTracker is the only that I've created a custom button layout for.

If you have a non Android smartphone please take a look at the apps for your device from one of the following links:

If you have a Windows Mobile phone (not Windows Phone) please try to install the OSMTracker (this is the original version) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSMtracker#Download if you can’t see the OSM wiki http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile#Track_making_features for other apps.

BlackBerry: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/BlackBerry#Track_making_features

Track My Journey looks like it has all the desired features but the free version has limitation and you have to register to download it http://www.trackmyjourney.co.uk/index.php?page=welcome&

Symbian: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Symbian#Track_making_features

Where am I http://www.symbianos.org/whereami looks good

Windows Phone: MapSalt Mini http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MapStalt_Mini and xMaps http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/XMaps are both free apps that might work

iPhone: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Iphone#Track_making_features

If you are bring an Android tablet (that doesn’t have a GPS), iPad (WiFi only models), or iPod touch please install OsmPad

iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/osmpad/id528505594?mt=8
