Discussing the Essay "Questions for Free Market Moralists"
Details
Join the Syracuse Philosophy Meetup as we discuss Amia Srinivasan’s essay “Questions for Free Market Moralists.” It's a quick read!
In this essay, the philosopher Amia Srinivasan discusses the ideas of Robert Nozick, whose seminal work Anarchy, State, and Utopia presented a picture of a just society based on the free market. As Srinivasan puts it, Nozick argued that “the only legitimate function of the state was to ensure the workings of the free market by enforcing contracts and protecting citizens against violence.”
In her essay, Srinivasan brings up 4 questions she has for followers of Nozick’s philosophy and argues that “the Nozickian view, from the perspective of common sense morality, is absurd.”
What do you think? Is the free market moral? What does justice for a liberal capitalist society look like? Are Srinivasan’s arguments sound? We’ll discuss these questions and more.
No previous knowledge is required, but it will be helpful to read the article before coming. Let me know if you can't open the link.
Also, by the way: While this meetup is free to attend, and you are NOT required at all to pay anything, I'm turning on fundraising for this meetup. The 6-month cost for me is $178.99 and it renews Mar 6 so I'm trying to raise that amount through the platform. Again, donations are not necessary but welcome.
