Code and Coffee is an inclusive, informal co-working session. People of all skill levels attend, and we love it that way. Many people bring projects to work on, and many other people socialize the entire time. It's entirely up to you!

Early Cancer Detection: Using Code to Find a Needle in a Haystack - Alex Buckley
Abstract: Detecting cancer early is an incredibly difficult problem often compared to finding a needle in a haystack. I'll give an overview of the biology of cancer and how cancer signal can be identified in blood sample. I'll describe both the biological and computational challenges of cancer detection and explain why AI hasn't solved this for us (yet). Presenter: Alex has been working for Freenome, a blood-based cancer screening company, for three years. She has a PhD in biomedical science and is passionate about all things related to bioinformatics and big data. She currently lives in Gig Harbor.

Free street parking is available all day Sunday in Tacoma. You can also park for free all day at the Tacoma Dome station. From there, hop on the T Line for a 10-minute ride to Courthouse Square (exit at the Theater District Station and head east down the hill towards Pacific and A Street).
