Itinerary (estimate):
8:45 Leave Narrows Park and Ride for carpooling
Drive to Port Townsend Ferry Terminal 1.30 to 1.50 hours
11:00 Catch the 11 am sailing to Whidbey Island
Estimate fare for Ferry: $14.20 + $4.25/passenger . Estimate for 4-person carpool = $6.75 per person.
Estimated gas, & wear and tear to driver $15 - 20 per person.
Be Prepared to pay diver $25ish dollar per person
Have lunch on Ferry (bring your lunch). Make sure you have snacks and water for hike
11:40 Arrive on Whidbey Island and drive to trailhead
12:30 Start hike. The trailhead is NOT at the Ebey State Park, nor Fort Ebey's Campground. We will meet the parking at the end of Cemetery Road, Coupeville, WA
4:00 Return to vehicle, drive home
7:00 Option for dinner when we return to park and ride (Cloverleaf Tavern)
About the hike:
Ebey's Landing is perched on a bluff overlooking majestic Puget Sound is the unique acreage of Ebey’s Landing National Reserve and Washington State Park.
We will start and end our hike at the Prairie Overlook trailhead by the Sunnyside Cemetery. The Prairie Ridge Trail will pass by the historic Jacob Ebey house and blockhouse on your way to the bluff. At the end of the Prairie Ridge Trail, Traverse along the bluff, enjoying the wildflowers on the slope to your left and the windswept trees to your right. The trail gradually descends along the bluff, offering an ever-changing perspective of the lagoon below, a birdwatchers haven. Hike until you come to a switchback, and descend steeply through several switchbacks to the beach. Ramble south along the beach until you arrive at the junction with the Ebey’s Landing parking lot. Head north along the prairie to the junction you started at, and the turn right to return to the Prairie Overlook parking lot the same way you came
What to bring:
1. Sun protection (the trail is exposed to the elements)
2. Wind/rain protection (the trail is exposed to the elements)
3. Lunch, snacks, water (there is no water on the trails and this is a long day)
4. Money for your driver to cover ferry and gas costs (bring small bills, drivers will not have change)
5. Your first aid kit, medication for the day if needed
6. Binoculars (optional)
