What we’re about
Tacoma Outdoors Adventures is a social group focused on enjoying the great outdoors, from hiking and camping to biking and snowshoeing and more. We welcome members of all skill and experience levels, the main requirement is just wanting to get out and enjoy the outdoors with others. This is a great group to get out there and do the things you enjoy and meet others who do as well. Many of our members have made friendships that carry beyond our posted events.
What we’re not...
We’re not just an “outdoor” group. We like to do other things; movie nights, dinners, bbq’s, wine tasting, dancing, and more.
We’re not just Tacoma. While a large number of our members are from Tacoma and the immediately surrounding area, we have members that join us on a regular basis from Olympia, Bremerton, Auburn and other areas. We've grown, but Tacoma is where we got our start and most of our events continue to be planned with the idea that we’re leaving from the Tacoma area.
We’re not a “hook up” group. While our group is primarily comprised of members who are single, this is not a dating site. We have a great mix of singles, couples, and families that share a common love of the outdoors. Many of us joined this group after moving to the area from other parts of the country and it's been a great way to meet others with common interests and make lasting friendships.
Respect for each other is of the utmost importance. Failure to do so my result in the leadership team issuing a warning. If there’s a second occurrence, the leadership team reserves the right to remove the member from the group, and will refund any dues paid within the last 6 month.
Belonging is not a right, but a privilege.
Profiles: A true profile photo is required for security purposes. This is to minimize opportunities for spam and internet spoofing. Also, being able to see you in your profile photo makes it much easier to connect when meeting for events.
Annual dues: There is a modest $5 annual dues to join the group. The dues are primarily to cover the fees charged by Meetup. The amount of dues collected annually will be analyzed and if there is a surplus we will look at making a donation of an outdoor related charitable organization and/or using funds to help organize a group-wide event such as a picnic or open house type event.
New members are given a 30 day trial. We feel this is more than enough time to attend at least one or two events to help decide if we’re a fit for you. If the dues have not been paid by the end of that 30 day period your membership will be suspended until they are paid. Suspended accounts are removed after 60 days.
Event Coordinators: All members are event coordinators. This means if you want to organize an event you can and are actually encouraged to! No events aimed at selling to the members (ie Avon, MaryKay, Tupperware parties.) Please keep it on theme with Fitness, Outdoors, and/or Social.
Carpools are often organized and those riding should be prepared to help with gas and pass expenses. $5 to $10 is often common, depending on how far away the destination is. Also be prepared with a change of shoes/outerwear and a bag to put muddy/wet gear in for the ride home.
Thanks for checking us out, I hope you decide to join us on one of our upcoming adventures!
Disclaimer: Our event organizers are not professional hike leaders/guides. We simply set up hikes and other adventures and help facilitate carpooling. ## Details
Paradise or Tatoosh Range SNOW Hike - MRNP - Slow but Challenging
Mount Rainier Area > SW - Paradise
Length: 4 to 8 miles, roundtrip (estimated)
Elevation Gain: 1000 to 2500 feet (estimated)
Highest Point: 7600 feet (estimated)
We have lots of options for hiking near Paradise or in the Tatoosh Range. We'll decide what we'll actually do once we're up at MRNP. This time of year, there is still a lot of snow up high. I expect we'll be hiking on snow most - if not all - of the time. Bring your crampons or microspikes (or even snowshoes if you want; I'm planning on hiking in sturdy high-top hiking boots), as well as a pair of gaiters.
Tentative plans: We'll start at Paradise and climb up to McClure Rocks, Cowlitz Rocks, or some other destination. We can decide what we want to do based on participants' desires, as well as weather and trail conditions. Another alternative is to hike some of the trails, scrambles, and peaks in the Tatoosh Range.
Expect a moderately difficult and challenging hike, including hiking on snow. Bring your microspikes, gaiters, trekking poles, and all the other usual suspects for hiking on snow in a late-spring/early-summer expedition, including layers of clothing, sunscreen, lunch, and plenty of water.
PLEASE NOTE: This hike is subject to cancellation or change in date due to weather, snow conditions, and/or participants desires. I am open to doing something else in MRNP if participants want to do something other than these suggestions (e.g., hiking up to Comet Falls, van Trump Park, or Mildred Point.
We will carpool from Bethel Station in Spanaway, meeting in the parking lot east of the Burger King, west of the big Fred Meyer store. This location is on Mountain Highway (aka Pacific Ave.; aka WA Hwy 7) on the south side of Spanaway, between 22nd Avenue East and 224th Street East, on the east side of the highway. The address for the Fred Meyer store is: 22303 Mountain Hwy E, Spanaway, WA 98387. Please be at Bethel Station for car-pooling prior to 6:30 AM so we can leave right at 6:30. Other carpooling or meeting arrangements are possible; please coordinate with me before hand.
