Welcome! to this updated July 2012 edition of the Newsletter of The Tai Chi School of Westchester containing class scheduling updates, interesting Internet links and other updates about Tai Chi and the School.

We will be scheduling another Meet-Up soon. Feel free to submit any requests or ideas for a meeting. Welcome all new members! Have a wonderful, healthy Summer practicing and doing Tai Chi. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Schedule Notes:  School is on holiday from Friday, August 24 through Monday, September 3.  Classes resume on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

Stick Form class begins on Saturday, September 9, 2012 at 8:45 a.m., continuing every Saturday thereafter.  Once through the form Two-Person Stick Form will start, which will reinforce and expand upon these techniques.

Martial Applications class is an ongoing class on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.  Each week explores the martial applications of a new move within the form.  Whether you are looking for a deeper understanding of the elements of the form or expansive self-defense applications, this class provides new insights into your Tai Chi experience.

Location Information:  Tai Chi School of Westchester, now in its 34th year, is celebrating its second anniversary at its new space at 101 Pondfield Road, Bronxville, New York, on the second floor of the West Center Church above the Montessori School.  The entrance is via the staircase on the right side of the building.  In case you haven’t been to the new location, it offers free, well-lit parking and even more personalized instruction from Master Colon.

Quick Quiz:  The hip’s adductor/abductor conundrum.  Most people can’t remember which is which or which does what.  Do you know?  If so, do you have a mental device for remembering which is which and what they do?  Write and let us know!

Teaching Certificate Program:  One of the many great things about Tai Chi is that, with no belts or badges, the competition and comparison is truly and only with yourself.  In our School it has also had the unusual effect of building a great camaraderie among the students.  Studying and practicing Tai Chi is a life-long process, so while one never “arrives,” one also never needs a place to arrive to.  At the same time, standards can be quantified for purposes of teaching.  The School has certified many teachers over the years and has developed a formal certification program which will further enhance the School’s reputation in the Tai Chi teaching community.  Teachers certified by Master Colon now teach in several states and on two continents.  Of course one of the benefits of becoming a teacher is that a teacher always learns more than the student.  Keep this certification program in mind for your future Tai Chi plans.

Sifu’s Corner:  Email Sifu a Tai Chi, Tao, or Chi Gung question, and if it’s chosen for a Newsletter you’ll receive a free class pass.  In any event, you’ll receive an answer to your inquiry.

September is Survey Month:  We’ve hired a marketing company to conduct our third annual anonymous survey (our first by email and our first “global” survey).  We will send it using Constant Contact, an email service, but all responses go to the marketing company.  They will consolidate the answers and provide us with bulk responses.  Though they will transmit specific comments, they will not share the sources.  In this way we hope to hear and learn from your most candid concerns and desires.  Whatever we learn from this will serve us all.  If you provide them a mailing or email address (no name necessary), they will forward a free class pass as a “thank you” for continuing to help improve the School.

Taoist Thought for the Day:  Tao (or Dao) is often translated as “the way.”  Tao is an experience of each thing, of everythingness and of nothingness, all at the same time; it is the impelling force and the result of the force itself; it is the expression of will and the intent of emptiness.  It contains the peacefulness of enlightenment, the emanations of the most violent vibrations, yet it is the container itself.  In the time it took you to read this, you experienced a moment of the Tao.  How would you describe Tao?  Send us your experience, your poem, of the Tao (and your name, if you wish).

Write us with your ideas to include in the Newsletter.  See you next month!
