Thank you for your support of our nonprofit organization! The ASPCA indicates that of the roughly 3.9 million dogs entering shelters per year approximately 31% are euthanized. In some urban areas these numbers run as high as 78%. Be a part of reducing euthanasia rates by hiking with local homeless hounds! Socialization and exercise can reduce kennel stress and anxiety and improve shelter dog behaviors, thus extending their lives. Tails of the Trail invite you to hike with shelter dogs for a couple hours of exercise and companionship. We're partnering with Nassau Humane Society (NHS) (https://www.nassauhumane.org/) and we'll hike the furry pups on the beach at Main Beach for 2-3 miles, depending on the temperatures that morning. Agenda: 8:30a - Arrive at the parking lot at by the Fort (please note it will take about 10 minutes to drive there, it is at the very end of the park) to sign in and attend our required Volunteer Orientation. The guard station will most likely be empty, there is no charge for hikers and volunteers so you can just drive through to the back of the park. 8:45a - Get paired with your furry hiking companion and hit the trails! There will be water stations along the way with volunteers throughout the trails to guide you. 9:45a - Complete hike with the dogs, cool down, pup portraits and pupuccino treats. There may even be time for splashes in the dog pools (weather permitting). 10:00a - Now it's time for human socialization and our treats. 10:15a - Conclude event and thanks so much for joining us! What to bring: • You may bring a guest but only one (1) dog per RSVP. • Waitlisted participants are encouraged to join in the FUN though will not be guaranteed a dog to walk. • Children with a parent or guardian are welcome to participate however kids under 18 may not be the sole leash holder. • Please feel free to bring donations for the shelter (treats, old blankets and sheets, canned dog food). • No personal pets allowed. • Please load the app WoofTrax (aka Walk for a Dog) (IOS) (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/walk-for-a-dog/id643857704?mt=8) or (Android) (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.actionxl.wooftrax.wfad) on your Smart Phone and select NHS as your sponsored shelter so they can earn financial donations from our event.
