Mount Lemmon Loop Hike (Trails 5 & 5A) -- 2.3 Miles
Details
Beat the Tucson heat and head up the mountain with us! At the summit, temps run significantly cooler than the valley -- perfect for a comfortable hike even as summer approaches. No dog? No problem! All are welcome, pups are just a bonus.
Join us for a scenic 2.3-mile loop hike along Trails 5 and 5A near the summit of Mount Lemmon! This is a welcoming, no-rush hike -- we move at the pace of the slowest hiker, so anyone who wants to join should feel confident coming out.
The Hike Rated easy with approximately 370 feet of elevation gain, this route does include some sections that will keep you on your toes: rocky terrain, narrow paths, and occasional steep slopes. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is recommended. Rest stops will be taken as needed along the way -- just keep in mind that seating on trail is natural only (think fallen logs and boulders, not park benches).
Predicted Weather Mostly sunny with a high of 70 degrees -- gorgeous hiking weather! (Weather is subject to change; always check forecasts before heading up the mountain.)
What to Bring
- Water for you and your pup -- cooler temperatures do not mean less water! Bring more than you think you need.
- Snacks as desired
- Hiking poles if that is your preference
Meeting Location & Schedule We'll meet at the Mount Lemmon Trailhead/Observatory Parking Lot at the end of Ski Run Road/Observatory Road, near the Steward Observatory. This is located past Summerhaven, at the very end of the road -- about 1.7 miles past the Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley area. The lot is medium-sized with restrooms on site.
Meet near the restrooms at 9:45 AM. We will begin hiking at 10:00 AM -- please arrive on time so we can get started together!
Parking Fee A $8/day parking fee is required, or you can use a federal recreation pass (America the Beautiful, etc.). Please plan accordingly.
Dogs Welcome! Leashed dogs are welcome on this trail. You are welcome to allow your dog off leash at your own discretion and risk, but please be aware of your surroundings and other hikers. Because we will be hiking as a group, all dogs attending must be well socialized with both other dogs and people. If your pup struggles with either, please plan to keep them leashed for the comfort and safety of everyone on the trail.
Group Size: Limited to 10 Hikers To be courteous to other hikers needing parking and to keep things manageable on the trail, I'm capping this group at 10 people. Sign up early if you're interested!
