SATURDAY KAYAKING on Meramec River. Onondaga to Blue Springs.
Details
A really pretty 10 mile float down the Meramec. We will pass the spectacular Vilander Bluff, the highest and longest bluff on the Meramec River. A few challenging spots, but mostly easy.
You need some basic kayaking skills, and your dog should be kayak savvy. This is not the place for first time paddlers or dogs, especially in cold weather. There is no way out, once you start. River levels vary, depending on rainfall.
EVERYONE MUST WEAR PFD WHEN ON THE WATER. DOGS TOO!
We are not trained in water rescue, and we don't want any people or dogs injured or killed.
CLOTHING: Depending on weather and water temp, you might need some cold water clothes also, wetsuit/waterproof pants/knee high waterproof boots/warm socks. There is a checklist in the "DISCUSSIONS" tab on this website of what you need.
We will be camping at Onondaga State Park this weekend. If you only want to do the float, be at the campground by 9:00 a.m. Bring your own coffee and snacks. I'll hopefully be at Campsite #47, but that doesn't mean the group will be gathering there.
THERE IS ZERO CELL RECEPTION AT CAMPGROUND. Be sure to stay in touch and keep your rsvp updated. We'll try to check from time to time, but we have to leave the park and get to the top of the hill in our cars to do this. No guarantees, but we might try to check up on you.
We don't stick to an exact schedule, we leave when we're ready. The float will take about 5 hours, once we hit the water. Allow for the entire day on the water.
BRING LUNCH.
We will take our kayaks to the launch site at Onondaga and inflate. Then a couple of us will stay to guard the boats while others run shuttle to Blue Springs takeout ramp. We will actually launch somewhere between 10:00 and 11:00.
Here is the link for Blue Springs Creek Conservation Area, our takeout point.
