World Literature Discussion: The Stranger

Read Around the World is a small monthly book club dedicated to exploring world literature.

This month we will be reading The Stranger by French author Albert Camus—an atmospheric novella defined by its stark, detached prose. The narrative follows an unconventional man whose refusal to conform to societal expectations of grief and morality leads to a series of unsettling events. The first line alone is iconic and sets the tone for the rest of the story:

“Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don’t know.”

Curious? We are too. Let’s dive into this one together, shall we?

• Rotating partner discussion (the host will prepare a few questions to guide conversation)

We will meet on the 2nd floor of Vino Vino Café in Daan from 1:00-2:30PM on Saturday, 4/25/2026. Attendees are asked to make a purchase at the cafe for kindly hosting our event.

本月我們將閱讀法國作家 阿爾貝·加繆（Albert Camus） 的《異鄉人》，這是一部以簡潔、冷靜筆觸聞名的氛圍濃厚中篇小說。故事描述一位非傳統的男子，他對社會對悲傷與道德的期待毫不遵從，進而引發一連串令人不安的事件。第一行就已經經典，為整本故事定下基調：
