World Literature Discussion: Convenience Store Woman

Read Around the World is a small monthly book club dedicated to world literature.

This month’s pick is Convenience Store Woman by Japanese author Sayaka Murata. The story follows a woman who, despite not living up to society’s expectations, feels content with her life, until the sudden introduction of a similarly alienated man threatens to upset her world. At once funny, unsettling, and deeply observant, the novel explores social conformity, gender expectations, and the question of what it means to live a “normal” life.

Event structure:
brief introductions
rotating partner discussion (the host will prepare some questions in advance)
group discussion

We will meet on Saturday, May 16th from 1:00-3:00 PM at Triangle Garden Cafe. Attendees are kindly asked to make a purchase at the cafe for hosting our event.

This event is Chinese/English bilingual friendly.

Read Around the World 是一個每月舉辦的小型讀書會，專注於世界文學。

本月選書為日本作家村田沙耶香的《便利店人間》。故事描述一位不符合社會期待、卻對自己生活感到滿足的女性，直到一名同樣與社會格格不入的男子突然闖入，打亂了她原本穩定的世界。這本小說既幽默又令人不安，同時充滿敏銳觀察，探討了社會規範、性別期待，以及「正常生活」究竟代表什麼。

活動流程：
• 簡短自我介紹
• 輪流配對討論（主持人將事先準備討論問題）
• 全體討論

我們將於 5 月 16 日（星期六）下午 1:00–3:00 在 Triangle Garden Cafe 聚會。為感謝咖啡店提供場地，請參加者於現場點購飲品或餐點。
