I used to think that people who pick up rubbish were doing it
just for self-satisfaction,
or simply because they enjoyed gathering with others.

While cycling around New Zealand,
I saw so many beautiful landscapes.
At the same time, I also saw a lot of litter thrown away along the roads.

I work in the food industry,
and as a chef, I kept asking myself:
What can I do?
Of course, cooking is part of it.
But before cooking, there is something even more important we need to do.

It’s obvious, but
ingredients come from the soil, the water, and the ocean.
If that starting point is polluted,
no matter how skilled a chef is,
we can’t create truly good food.

Recently, more and more artificial foods have been developed.
If you like them, that’s fine.

But if we want to keep eating delicious food that comes from the Earth,
we need to protect the environment.

Picking up rubbish alone won’t solve everything.
People’s awareness needs to change,
and honestly, it can feel endless.

But why not spread one part of Japanese culture:
“Leave the place cleaner than when you arrived.”

If picking up just one piece of rubbish
can help lead to a future with good food,
that’s why I’m doing this.

Doing it as an event helps.
It’s easier than doing it alone,
and it makes you think,
“Alright, let’s pick up some rubbish today.”

So before enjoying Christmas,
I decided to organize a rubbish clean-up event.
