Birds, Buds, and Blossoms: Contemplative photography workshop morning session

Details

The earth has its music for those who will listen. R. Holmes.

This week we will go beyond the blossoms and also appreciate the delicate leaf buds springing to life. And if we are quiet and careful we can see birds perched in the branches enjoying Spring. I can also show you where the baby geese are feasting. But stay back, or the mama gets mad.

I am going to offer this same class twice. Once Friday AM and once Saturday PM.

Photographing flowers is a deeply satisfying experience that never gets old. There are countless ways to express the beauty of flowers. The key is to find your own voice, your unique way of translating your experience of beauty into an image. But beyond the flowers, there are many other wonders of spring for us to discover and photograph.

To do this you need to slow down and be fully present. The slower you go, the more you will see. I have designed several learning assignment to help you grow as a photographer. See sample photos in the album below.

We will explore some artistic methods in this workshop designed to capture the more expressive, emotional aspects of flowers. This will include:
-- Macro and Closeup
-- Shallow depth of field
-- Intentional camera motion
-- Shooting Through
If you are interested in composition for landscapes this is also a good session for you. All levels welcome including iPhones.

In this workshop I will cover recommended camera settings to capture the colors and textures of the blossoms and buds accurately so you don't need to do post processing to fix the image.

Composition is key when working big blossoming trees for both the closeup shots, and large scenes. Ill cover some composition strategies that will help you choose the best placement for your subject to create dynamic, interesting compositions.

We will also work with different focus modes so you can be more precise about what areas of the frame are in pin sharp focus. We will also work with manual mode focus to blur edges and create a dreamy effect.
Hope to see you on Friday or Saturday. There will be several flower classes coming up so keep an eye on your email for announcements.Next up will be the Lilacs at Arnold Arboretum.

Also a reminder our first Brimfield excursion of the year is coming up May 16th. See the full description on our site.
