Greetings Photographers! You are invited to do something fun this weekend. If you are interested in learning how to photograph urban street scenes, please join us. It has been a year since we headed to Chinatown so let's go! The neighborhood is undergoing massive transformations which makes for very interesting photography. Many contradictions.
You can practice photographing people if you like, but it is not necessary. Lots of other subjects in this neighborhood.

I have designed a series of creative photography challenges to help you build specific street photography skills such as capturing interactions, people in motion, and small details of daily life. See samples in the album below. This includes people, but also architecture and urban subjects. There are many interesting windows to focus on that feature fabulous food.

This requires slowing down to "read the scene" so you see beyond the typical snapshots and capture images that tell a story. We will work with available light, compositions and more.

If you have always wanted try street photography, this is the perfect way to get started feeling more confident and comfortable. If you are already experienced at this, I will have a few "extra credit" creative challenges for you. All levels welcome.

HANDOUTS ARE PROVIDED so you can practice all the lessons on your own again after class.

Some of the topics I will cover in the workshop will be:

• Timing and positioning so you increase the chances of getting the lucky shot.

• Composition of subjects within the frame and in relationship to each other.

• How to use elements of color, light, texture, and motion to evoke emotion and tell a story.

• How to simplify the shot so you capture the essence of the moment.

• What are the recommended camera settings if you want to go off auto catch the action

How to photograph reflections and window interiors.

Reading the scene and selecting the sweet spot for your subjects.

If you are into street art, Chinatown has many murals and wall art if you know where to look. I will point these out to you.

We will meet first for the group instruction part of the class. Then when we go out to shoot I will work with each of you to offer on the spot suggestions and ideas for getting the best shots. You also receive photo field notes that summarize the key learning points so you can use them next time on your own.

After class you are invited to post 5 of your photos here on our site and receive friendly feedback. This critique is an important part of the learning process so I encourage you to take advantage of that as well.

Closest T stop is Chinatown on the Orange Line or South Station on the Red Line. And there is a public parking lot near by at One Post Office Square. Very reasonable.
I hope you can join us for this fun street photography workshop.
