Greetings Photographers,
If you love grit, decay, abandoned buildings, light, texture and moody photos, this class is for you. The buildings on the island are eerily haunting and yet have a poetic atmosphere we will strive to capture.

I am very excited to announce it is time for our annual trip to historic Fort Warren on Georges Island. This year I am opening the class to all levels and will split you into two groups. Let's escape the heat and head out on the harbor.

Group A. More advanced requires tripod and experience shooting in manual mode can do long exposure, interior shots in low light.

Group B. Beginner and intermediate will to do exterior shots of the grounds and fort plus one interior area with plenty of light. No tripod or knowledge of manual mode required.

We start the class on the ferry boat ride with some spectacular shots of the Boston Harbor and skyline. Bring extra batteries for this day you may need them.

If you have done this class before, why not join again and try some new compositions and settings. I have been there 6 times and always see something new. We will discuss Wabi Sabi and how to capture it.

You can see some sample photos from previous participants below to get inspired.

Some of the highlights of the class will be:

We will work on interior architectural details to create depth and capture the melancholic mood of this fascinating space.

You will work on becoming aware of how to use light and shadow to add interest to your images. Once you see more subtle qualities of light, you can use this more effectively to create mesmerizing images.

We will also do some work in black and white so you can see how the different values in the shot make it more dramatic when it comes to decay and textures.

Both groups will also shoot in color to capture the subtle faded shades of stone and wall coverings of the abandoned chambers. The passing of time is really our subject and we will use visual elements to express this.

If you are shooting outside, there are lots of fantastic textures, colors, and grit to explore.

We will take the Boston Harbor Ferry that departs Long Wharf at 10:00 am. Be sure to be there by 9:30 to board. Long Wharf is not by the Aquarium. It is on the other side of the Marriott Hotel so be sure you are in the right spot by Columbus park.

WE return on the 3:00 pm boat or you can stay longer on your own. There is one boat after that.

There are restrooms and lots of fascinating subjects to photograph.Bring a bag lunch if you like and get a cold drink there. Not much food available on the island.

Harbor Ferry Ticket NOT INCLUDED in class tuition. This is weather permitting. So please do not purchase your ferry ticket in advance. If we have rain on Saturday, save Sunday as plan B.

I will confirm go no go on Friday evening and then you can buy your ferry ticket on line or at the wharf. And if we have rain, I will issue refunds for the class tuition. No refunds are issued by the harbor ferry company.

I hope you can join the fun! I am keeping the group small, only 8 participants.
