[ONLINE] Patents 101: Discovering the Value of Intellectual Property

Details

[If your business has been impacted by COVID19, please visit Maryland’s business resource page: https://businessexpress.maryland.gov/coronavirus]

Maryland is home to 78 Federal labs; twice as many as any other state. What does that mean for business? It means prolific innovation is going on all the time and much of that innovation is available for businesses to use to solve technical challenges, enhance existing products, or manufacture completely new products.

Intellectual property – whether your own or licensed from a federal lab or university – can be an important business differentiator. To understand potential ROI requires first understanding how to interpret a patent, then developing a solid commercialization plan. Among other information that needs to be conveyed in a commercialization plan is manufacturing considerations.

We’ll cover those topics and also go over how DefTech undertakes its IP Matchmaking process, which is the process of matching a business need to technology available to license through Maryland DoD labs. Understanding this process will help businesses self-assess prior to taking on a patent license. We’ll cover:

• Reading and understanding a patent with Mark Henderson, Patent Attorney with Simplify IP Law, PLLC
• Commercialization Plan Components with Gary Evans, Executive Director of DefTech
• Manufacturing considerations with Cyrus Etemad- Moghadam, CEO of RPM-Tech
• Preparing to license with Griffin St. Louis, DefTech Program Manager

Who should attend: This MeetUp is for anyone considering licensing IP to enhance their existing product, anyone considering partnering with a federal lab to license IP, businesses with current IP that need to understand prototype / manufacturing considerations of their IP, and anyone curious about this topic.

Note that we intend to tape this MeetUp. By joining, you consent to your image and/or voice being recorded (you may, of course, block your camera and mute your mic and just join us to listen! We’re more than happy to have you).

After RSVPing, attendees will be able to view the link to participate in this online discussion.

Note: use the “question” posed with registration to let us know what you’re working on or what industry you’re in so we can tailor our discussion to meet your needs. Think of this as an opportunity to promote your work!
