[ONLINE] Negotiating Patent License Agreements

[If your business has been impacted by COVID19, please visit Maryland’s business resource page: https://businessexpress.maryland.gov/coronavirus]

Intellectual property – whether your own or licensed from a federal lab or university – can be an important business differentiator.

We’ve mentioned this before ... Maryland is home to 78 Federal labs; twice as many as any other state. For business, this means prolific innovation is going on all the time and much of that innovation is available for businesses to use to solve technical challenges, enhance existing products, or develop completely new products.

Patent License Agreements are one method for accessing lab intellectual property. As we’ve discussed, business will need to suggest licensing terms in the product development plant that research labs require.

As with any negotiation, it’s critically important to understand the needs, goals, and concerns of both parties. We’ll get the inside scoop on what the labs are looking for, why they charge fees, and what those fees are. Of course, it makes good business sense to make sure you understand the legal ramifications of any agreements we enter into. We’ll hear from Nemphos Braue, a DefTech partner with expertise in helping businesses negotiate license agreements successfully.

In this session, we’ll cover:
• The goals and needs of the lab with Rick Tarr, Southern Maryland NavalX Tech Bridge Director and Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division Technology Transfer Office Director

• Legal concerns for business from IP strategies to exclusive and nonexclusive licensing with Nempos Braue, named the 2018 The Daily Record Readers’ Choice for Best Law Firm for Intellectual Property

Who should attend: This MeetUp is for anyone considering licensing IP to enhance their existing product, anyone considering partnering with a federal lab to license IP, and anyone curious about negotiation tips.

We intend to tape this MeetUp. By joining, you consent to your image and/or voice being recorded (you may, of course, block your camera and mute your mic and just join us to listen! We’re more than happy to have you).

After RSVPing, attendees will be able to view the link to participate in this online discussion.

Note: use the “question” posed with registration to let us know what you’re working on or what industry you’re in so we can tailor our discussion to meet your needs ... use it as an opportunity to promote your work!
