[ONLINE] How to Read a Patent

[If your business has been impacted by COVID19, please visit Maryland’s business resource page: https://businessexpress.maryland.gov/coronavirus]

We had a great overview session on patents several weeks ago, broadly covering topics such as how business can prepare to license research, elements of patents, how to consider a patent from a manufacturing perspective, and how to think through developing a product development plan. In this session, we’re responding to requests for a deeper dive into techniques for understanding a patent prior to licensing.

Maryland is home to 78 Federal labs; twice as many as any other state. What does that mean for business? It means prolific research and innovation is going on all the time and much of that innovation is available for businesses to use to solve technical challenges, enhance existing products, or develop new products.

Intellectual property – whether your own or licensed from a federal lab or university – can be an important business differentiator. To understand potential ROI requires first understanding how to interpret a patent, then developing a solid commercialization plan.

The Army Research Lab patent we’ll use as an example: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PTXT&S1=10663389&OS=10663389&RS=10663389

Who should attend: This MeetUp is for anyone considering licensing IP to enhance their existing product, anyone considering partnering with a lab to license IP, and anyone curious about this topic.

Note that we intend to tape this MeetUp. By joining, you consent to your image and/or voice being recorded (you may, of course, block your camera and mute your mic and just join us to listen! We’re more than happy to have you).

After RSVPing, attendees will be able to view the link to participate in this online discussion.

Note: use the “question” posed with registration to let us know what you’re working on or what industry you’re in so we can tailor our discussion to meet your needs. Use it as an opportunity to promote your work!

The Army Research Lab patent we intend to review can be found here but is subject to change: https://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=0&docid=010352987&IDKey=&HomeUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fpdfpiw.uspto.gov%2F
